Can anyone reccommend a hotel near the airport that has a bit of life around it e. The hotels near the airport tend to be isolated. Nearby bars and restaurants are not very frequent. There is a stretch of Lat Krabang near the airport that has some of the big outdoor restaurants that Thais like to go to on the fringe of the city. But you'd need a taxi to get there. Central Bangkok is only little more than a half hour away by taxi, 15 minutes with the express train or 27 minutes with the commuter train.
So why not stay somewhere in the center, with all the life and colour of one of the world's great cities around you? I'm in exactly the same boat. I agree with bill , no real benefit in staying close to the airport , it's very quick to get downtown in a taxi or other method and just as quick and easy getting back.
My daughter stayed close to survanabhumi earlier this year and in the evening got a cab into town as there wasn't much around, she may as well have stayed downtown. Yes we have been to Bangkok a few times, but flight lands at 6pm evening time and we will have flown in from uk, so dont really want to go in to Bangkok Centre as I know we will be shattered, just want to have a meal and a couple of drinks and a wander then off to bed refreshed for next day.
Choose a hotel near the ARL train, and a half hour after you make it out of baggage claim, you can be checking into your hotel. Then, if you choose, there will be all manner of places nearby to have a meal, a drink or wind down. I agree with bill here, if your flight landed at midnight the airport hotels make a bit of sense but arriving at 6pm it really is as easy to go to the city so you have some choice about what you do, eat etc that evening! Somewhere like Mayfair suites is right by phaya thai, the end of the ARL and there's plenty in the surrounding area.
If you don't want to go into town then both the Regent Suvarnabhumi and the Ivory Suvarnabhumi are close to the airport and you can walk from the hotels to the Paseo Shopping Mall where there are a range of restaurants. They both run a free transfer service from the airport and are clean and cheap. There are pros and cons to each hotel.
For those people who don't want to go into town but need bars, then you could try the Dusit Princess Hotel at Srinakarin Road. There is the nearby Sky Bar or a range of cheap Karaoke Bars in that area. Dusit Princess is located right next to the Seacon Square shopping mall where you can shop to your hearts content and at the other side of the mall on the small side road is a nice restaurant called Rahn Aharn Klang Beung, which is situated next to a small lake. I have stayed a few times at a Best Western near the airport, they provide a free shuttle and there is a nice bar with a good restaurant.
Not much around the hotel though. Takes about 20 minutes in the shuttle to get to the hotel depending on traffic. If you stay near paseo mall , highly recommend Thai massage shop on ground floor. My wife and I had a lay over at Bangkok in October, stayed near paseo mall hotel and massage was the best we had in our 2 weeks Thailand holiday. Browse all 67, Bangkok topics ».
